YCHomes is a Educator that maximizes opportunities for First Nations in there own Builds. We partner with the community to create a program that best suites there needs. Every blue print is a chance for a ciriculium and the job sites are classrooms. Once the Band office decides on the build they want then the Education dept figures out a schedule and the amount of practical art credits assigned. Students also get enrolled in Youth Apprenticeship and upon completion they have future hours towards there trades ticket if the choose to carry on in the career. 1. Where do we get the funding for this program?
A: Currently 15 to 18 years old is a under funded category but this program touches on Housing, Education Employment Skills, Social »Development and Economic Development . By using our mobile program a school doesn’t have to commit to hiring a full time teacher and if that teacher is ticketed in trades that can be a expensive long term contract
2. Do students in public schools get high school credits and apprenticeship hours?
A: Yes we have access to the proper paperwork to fill out so First Nation public school students can receive credits and participate depending on how the Band designs the program
3. Do students have to graduate to get their hours and how many credits do they receive?
A: Yes it is a requirement for the students to graduate to receive apprenticeship hours and the school decides how many credits this program will give students as they line it up with the Practical Art courses content that we cover and they have in ciuricuilim
4. What steps does YCHomes take to ensure the students safety?
A: We have a full time National Construction Safety Officer on staff, Tailgate meetings are done daily, site inspections are done and we encourage the students to rotate through the role of onsite safety officer. The school is required to get the students their first aid, and fall protection courses in the week leading up to the start of the program. Plus the program has half the students in class learning about the hands on module they are about to do before they get on site
5. Is this only for high school students?
A: There are ways to incorporate young adults who are looking at completing high school. Funding is available to add already graduated young adults. Also we have another program to look at for this option.
6. Is there a liquid asset left after the program?
A: Yes after the program there is a house left over for the community.
7. Do we use our own high school teachers for this program?
A: We require a high school teacher to be supplied during the duration of the program,
8. Is it cheaper because the students are building it?
A: It is not cheaper because the high school students are building it, it actually drives the cost up due to them learning, more material gets used in this process and contractors may have to come in after hours to ensure the quality of the workmanship. All houses are built to CODE and we make sure they are up to standard.
9. Is there a way to recognize the students for the program?
A: Yes we encourage the community put on an event to show off the house as this is a huge accomplishment by the students. It gives us the opportunity to present them with a certificate and reference letter to future employers. Community involvement is super important and starting with a ground breaking and a ribbon cutting has be a huge part of what we do
